Now that we're deep in the midst of winter, it seems only appropriate that we discuss some of the biggest trends in terms of outerwear this season. As always in fashion, there are numerous options, seldom, if ever, is there only one "right" look. Rather than running through the the full gamut of cold weather options, we've decided instead to pick two of our favourite looks, utilitarian and downtown sophisticate, to further discuss and explore.
Inevitably, the utilitarian aesthetic makes it onto every fashion list every season. The parka, both classic and modern, is timeless. While indeed fashionable, it is also extremely functional. No longer heavy and bulky, parkas, like SAM's "Mini Hudson" (pictured above), can be lightweight, compact, and incredibly sleek. Treated with multiple layers of polyurethane, this cotton twill, fur-accented jacket is both wind and water resistant making it an ideal choice for cold weather wear. Layered over seasonal knits, on trend plaids, and second-skin skinnies, the parka not only is a winter neccessity, but is a wardrobe one as well. Up the style quotient further by adding a luxurious toque, statement making necklace, and shearling lined boots.
For those that favour an easy, more relaxed silhouette, the "robe coat" may be a viable option. The perfect blend of simplicity and chicness, this wraparound style is easy to dress up, and/or down. Slightly oversized, it pairs best with something tailored to keep the overall look balanced. Mackage's "Joslyn Coat" in double faced Black/Charcoal wool (pictured above) features fitted sleeves, a waterfall hood, snap button closure, subtle hi-lo hemline, and leather trimmed pockets. Play up the coat's minimalist feel by pairing with simple basics...a textured knit, ankle grazing leather leggings, and pointed-toe booties are fabulous options.
Just two of the many, MANY options available now that temperatures are dropping, remember, great outerwear makes any outfit instantly cooler!!!
