Local Love: Little Brick Cafe

Edmonton has an enriching local community and part of this, is a rising food scene. As a proud local business, and naturally, a lover of everything local, we want to provide you, our Yu readers, a roundup of where to go to get your fix on your next favourite thing after fashion: food!!!

Tucked away in a sleepy neighbourhood east of downtown Edmonton, the Little Brick Cafe & General Store will have you smiling from ear to ear as soon as you step through their iconic bright red door.

Touting itself as a cafe, general store, and event space, the Little Brick is a local favourite. In particular, their breakfast menu (which is served all day-bonus!) caught our eye as we visited this charming "home".

Top: "Breakfast Sandwich", Bottom: "Potted French Toast", Right: "Pine Haven Bacon & Eggs"

The "Breakfast Sandwich" carried a light flavour while the "Potted French Toast" embraced its Cinnamon persona. However, the winner was the "Pine Haven Bacon & Eggs", an absolute delight for breakfast or brunch! Featuring thick cut bacon, soft-boiled farm eggs on toast, and an apple cider hollandaise sauce, it was an absolute flavour explosion for your taste buds!

Winner! Winner! Pictured: "Pine Haven Bacon & Eggs"

The cafe itself is casual and a self-seating establishment; once you're ready to order, you head up to the counter and when the food is ready, it is brought to your table. Whilst waiting, you can indulge in their homemade baked goods, Alberta-roasted coffee, or browse the items for sale at the general store which includes unique products such as pineapple shot glasses and Bows & Arrows coffee.

The Little Brick Cafe & General Store is open from 8AM-4PM daily. As it can get quite busy, reservations are not permitted but it is definitely worth the wait. Tonight, we'll not only be dreaming about those "haven"-ly bacon & eggs, but also when our next trip to this quaint cafe will be!!!

Check them out at:

Designer Highlight: CUCHARA

In our first "Designer Highlight" segment, we put a spotlight on Montreal-born Anzie Jewelry. In this segment, we move our attention to the west coast where Edilou Canedo or, Edi, combined her influences from her hometown Victoria, Canada, with the urban, metropolitan elements of Toronto to create a jewelry line tastefully named CUCHARA (translated to "spoon" in Spanish).

Edi began designing jewelry at a young age. With a creative, hand-ons "trait" passed down from her mother, Edi was drawn to adding a modern touch to classic old collectors' spoons. She and a friend began reinventing them as charms to create pendants.

(Edi) Needless to say, Victoria didn't have a ton of options of 'stylish' clothes to wear and I felt it was nice to offer unique, original accessories for people!

Tell us about yourself!
I grew up in Victoria, BC, born to immigrant parents from the Philippines. I was a pretty well rounded student- but ended up studying sciences in University. I graduated from UVic [University of Victoria] with a Bio-Psyc major, but then decided to move to Toronto to attend Fashion Design school. I had a grumpy dog named Benji growing up, I loved him even though he always chewed my ankles and hated cuddling.

Where do you draw inspiration from?
Not gunna (sic) lie, I get a lot of inspiration from Tumblr. I could troll Tumblr for hours and be thoroughly entertained. There are a multitude of images that catch my eye- 90’s styles, old supermodel photos, home decor, plants, furniture, beach vibes, memes (lol). I also like to see what’s going on in street styles of London, Japan and Korea- I find their style super interesting and inspiring.

Do you have any specific piece or collection you are particularly proud of? If so, which?
I’d say I’m most proud of Cuchara's current collection! I think with each new collection I discover more about myself and my style and influences and use this personal growth to build a collection that really represents me and what I can see females today feeling good in. I definitely take into play the latest trends, but I also want to create pieces that could outlast trends and also be season-less. I see this to be the case for several pieces in the Paradise Collection.

What is a goal you hope to achieve in 5 years?
A goal in 5 years would be to be able to live in Canada for half the year, and travel, or live elsewhere the other half. I love learning and being immersed in the style and culture of other cities.

Thanks for sharing your eclectic personality with us and letting us discover the face behind the name. Excuse us while we head over to the Yu Fashion website while listening to Migos - T-Shirt.*

Edi's newest collection for CUCHARA is now online. Visit us in store or online at

*Edi's favourite song at the moment is T-Shirt by Migos

Designer Highlight: Anzie Jewelry

We are excited to announce a new segment, "Designer Highlight", to the blog where in each feature, we "sit" down with a designer and place the spotlight on the face behind the brand. How did they get started? What are they most proud of? What's their favourite song at the moment?

In this segment, learn about Anzie and her children Joanna & Jaclyn, and how the beloved Montreal-born jewelry line started out as a means of raising funds for research for a sick husband and father. Let's take a closer look into their lives which happens to include a lot of creativity, family values, and quality time with their adorable rescue dogs.

1. How did you get started designing jewelry? What inspired you?
We started designing jewelry as a hobby for ourselves. When Barry, [my] husband was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 1996, the family decided to create a collection of jewelry to raise funds for research and awareness for the cause. We fell in love with all of the coloured gemstones and then expanded the collection to include fine jewelry in addition to the Lifesaver Bracelets, which are dedicated to supporting non profit organizations.
Our family has a background in Fine art and painting so it was a natural progression for us to be in the art, fashion and jewelry world. We still enjoy painting and incorporate our artwork in our marketing and design.

2. Do you have any specific piece or collection you are particularly proud of?
We love the Aztec medallions. They are pieces with solid weight in gold, silver and diamonds and they are timeless. Starbursts and stars really attract us and these pieces sparkle yet they can be worn for any occasion. They are special pieces that stand out and make a statement.

3. Tell us about yourself!
[We] grew up in Montreal. We loved the lifestyle there and we were an artistic family. We spent a lot of time doing art including painting, sculpting, and making jewelry as a hobby. We were also an active family; we enjoyed skiing, tennis and swimming. We now live in different cities, Jaclyn and her family in New York, [myself] and [my] other children, Joanna and Robert as well as their families continue to live in Montreal.
We love dogs!  We have three Portuguese water dogs and a chihuahua corgi mix in our family - Kramer, Patch, Gus and Trooper - three of which are rescues. Patch, Kramer, and Gus all work at the Montreal head office with us :)

4. What do you like to do for fun? What hobbies do you have?
We love our dogs so much that we have created paw charms as part of our collection. We are all very active and love spending time outside.
[I[ create jewelry by hand for fun and loves golfing. Jaclyn sketches, paints and draws the designs by hand and loves the outdoors. Joanna cooks and loves spending time up north and going for walks with the dogs.
Jaclyn and Joanna's young children (Anzie's grandchildren) keep us busy as well as entertained.

5. What is your favourite song at the moment?
Jaclyn: Ed Sheeran - Shape of You
Joanna: Zayn - I don't want to live forever
Anzie: Bruno mars - 24k Magic

6. What are three must-have pieces in your wardrobe that you can’t get enough of at the moment?
Anzie: From Anzie - TURQUOISE! Starburst Medallion necklace, monogram disk pendant, mini turquoise starburst necklace
Equipment shirts, colourful shoes and Hermes scarf
Jaclyn:From Anzie  - Milly multicoloured necklace, Moonstone Marine drop earrings, Moonstone Twist ring
Flannel shirts - Rails, Silk shirts - Equipment, Moonboots from Browns
Joanna: From Anzie - Turquoise and diamonds Evil eye royale disk necklace, double starburst ear cuff, moonstone stackable rings.
Lululemon leggings, frye boots & Koie blouse

7. What’s a fun fact not many people may not know about you?
We thrive on being with family and that is how our whole business started, by having fun together. We love to party with our friends and family. Celebrations bring us together in each city that we live in.

Thanks for sharing with us Anzie, Joanna, & Jaclyn. We are continuously floored by your attention to detail and showcasing your talent and love for design in the brightest light. We look forward to seeing more of your pieces in the future!
