Jerd's Corner: The Importance of the Handbag

I have always loved purses, if I could change purses more than once a day, I would. Unfortunately, for over half the year I am subjected to an atrocious backpack, but now that school is over, I can change my purse as much as I like :)

A purse is more than just a necessity to hold your wallet and lip gloss, it truly completes an outfit, and can totally change your look. I've compiled a list of my favorite styles that are must-haves in every closet.

1. Colored Bags: The colored bag, notably neon, has to be the biggest trend in handbags for the season. A colored bag adds a hit of color to a relatively simple outfit, and is waaaay fun for summer. These bags can pack a lot of punch, so keep the style relatively small, otherwise you will probably get sick of it quickly. The cross-body bag has been very popular in bright colors. Designer wise, I absolutely love Proenza Schouler ps1 bag (left), another fun version is the Cambridge Satchel (right). Of course, we always have something here at Yu to fulfill ALL style requirements...introducing Rebecca Minkoff's  "Mini Mac" in Bright Orange, Denim Blue, and Neon Pink.

2. Studded Bags: If you're a rock star at heart (or just a wannabe) you need a studded bag. I love them;  added to a simple outfit, you instantly look 20 times cooler. The only downfall is the studs add weight, it can be challenging to find a stylish studded bag that doesn't weigh 30 pounds. I love how Nicky Hilton and Rachel Bilson make their studded bags spring appropriate by pairing them with lighter denim. Both the Alexander Wang "Coco Duffel" and Phillip Lim "Bow Bag," though fabulous, weigh a ton, but Rebecca Minkoff's "Moonstruck Bag" is actually super light in comparison...definitely a must have!

3. Motorcycle Bag: You can't talk about the motorcycle bag without discussing Balenciaga. The "City Bag" by Balenciaga has been the "IT" bag for 7+ years, a bag so popular that fashion insiders have decided to adopt it as a classic. It is the perfect everyday bag, one you won't soon tire of due to it's multi-purpose handles, and simple design. Rebecca Minkoff's "Cupid" is the perfect motorcycle bag at a fraction of the cost of a Balenciaga.

Which bag is YOUR favorite???
